After a mild winter season, spring-like weather is already upon us and baseball season is starting to heat up. With the start of Little League and High School tryouts, a large number of athletes are coming off an extended break and into a significant amount of throwing.
Throwing a baseball is a physically stressful activity on the body and painful conditions such as bursitis and tendonitis are very common early in the season. Little leaguers, young teens, and even high school athletes are still growing and often need guidance on proper off season strength and conditioning for the core and shoulder girdle to take on these stressful loads.
Please remember to warm up, perform scapular strengthening activities, and keep an eye on your pitch counts in order to prevent injury. If you do experience pain with throwing activities, contact your general practice physician or board certified orthopedic specialist to see if skilled sports physical therapy can get you back in the game.
